Wie binde ich meine USB-Festplatte ein?

Guten Abend allerseits!
Auch wenns vielleicht peinlich wird für mich:
Nachdem meine große Festplatte kurz vor dem Exitus ist, möchte ich einige Daten sichern. Dazu habe ich mir von einem Bekannten eine externe Festplatte USB 1.1 Typ Gericom HD530 mit 20Gb geliehen. Finde allerdings bisher keine Möglichkeit, die Platte zum laufen zu bringen.
Hier mal die Angaben aus tail /var/log/messages nach dem Einstöpseln

ich habe submount deaktiviert....
sda1 bis sde1 sind für meinen Cardreader resverviert und funktionieren mit diesem..

Noch einige Angaben: Athlon 1,3 Ghz, 786 MB Arbeitsspeicher, 120 Gb Samsung, Nvidia Geforce 2 MX/MX400, Philips-DVD und -CDRW.

Hmmm.... ich habe submount laufen und meine usb externe Platte wird automatisch erkannt.

Hast Du mal mit eingesteckter Platte neu gebootet ?

Zu dem Thema habe ich auch eine Frage. Meine Festplatte wird unter der Bezeichnung media/usb-storage-00042222200000148265:0:0:0p1 eingehängt. Kann man irgendwie diesen blöden Namen ändern? Z. B. in media/usb-festplatte oder was anderes.
